VE6DOK · Digital Modes
Use FT8 as a weak-signal tool, not a substitute for radio judgment.
FT8 is valuable when you understand what it can and cannot tell you.
What FT8 is
FT8 is a weak-signal digital mode designed for short structured exchanges. It is popular because it can decode signals that are difficult or impossible to copy by ear.
Beginner
FT8 is not a chat mode. It exchanges callsign, grid, report, and confirmation in a structured way.
Intermediate
It is excellent for checking propagation and making contacts during weak conditions.
Advanced
Use proper audio levels, time synchronization, band discipline, and station automation responsibly.
What FT8 is good for
- Weak-signal contacts.
- Checking whether a band is open.
- Confirming propagation paths.
- Operating when voice copy is poor.
What FT8 is not
- It is not a replacement for all operating skill.
- It is not conversational radio.
- It does not prove your voice signal will be readable.
