Antenna Testing

Testing & Using Your Antenna — Real-World Validation

This is where antennas prove themselves. Not on paper, not just on an analyzer — but on the air. The goal is simple: build → test → compare → improve.

Step-by-Step Testing Workflow

  1. Install antenna safely and correctly
  2. Check SWR and resonance with analyzer
  3. Get on-air and make contacts
  4. Record signal reports
  5. Compare results and adjust

SWR vs Real Performance

  • Low SWR does NOT guarantee good radiation
  • High SWR does NOT always mean bad performance
  • Real-world reports matter more than numbers alone

Use Nets for Testing (Highly Recommended)

Nets give you consistent, repeatable testing conditions and real signal reports.

Key HF Nets (Western Canada & Beyond)

  • Alberta Public Service Net
    Frequency: 3.700 MHz LSB
    Use: Regional coverage testing
  • Aurora Net
    Frequency: 7.100 MHz LSB
    Use: Mid-range propagation testing
  • Saskatchewan Public Service Net
    Frequency: 3.735 MHz LSB
    Use: Prairie regional comparisons
  • British Columbia Net
    Frequency: 3.729 MHz LSB
    Use: West coast propagation paths
  • Montana Net
    Frequency: 3.910 MHz LSB
    Use: Cross-border regional testing
  • ARES Net (Alberta)
    Frequency: 3.750 MHz LSB
    Use: Emergency-style communication testing
  • Maritime Mobile Service Net
    Frequency: 14.300 MHz USB
    Use: Long-distance / DX performance

How to Use Nets for Testing

  • Check in with your callsign
  • Ask for signal reports (RST)
  • Note signal strength and clarity
  • Repeat with different antennas or configurations

Real-World Testing Examples

Dipole vs Vertical

  • Dipole: stronger regional signals
  • Vertical: better long-distance reach

End-Fed Issues

  • Unstable SWR → likely counterpoise issue
  • RF in shack → feedline acting as antenna

Troubleshooting Signals

  • Weak signal + good SWR → inefficiency or poor placement
  • Strong noise → environmental interference
  • Inconsistent reports → propagation or installation issues

Key Takeaway

The air is the final test instrument. If it works on-air, it works.
