Lethbridge Weather

Reliable weather learning, local interpretation, and practical decision support.

Weather Radar Basics

Radar is an extremely useful short-range tool, but it is best treated as part of a decision system rather than a standalone answer.

Core understanding

Radar shows echoes from precipitation-sized targets and is excellent for identifying where weather is, how large it is, and where it is moving. It does not directly show pavement conditions, exact accumulation, or guaranteed surface precipitation type.

Practical interpretation

Radar is especially valuable for same-day decisions: commute timing, outdoor setup, radio operations, and storm approach. It helps answer what is near, how strong it is, and when it may arrive.

Deeper weather skill

Radar has limitations. Beam height rises with distance, virga can appear active aloft without much reaching the ground, and non-weather echoes can mislead. Always cross-check with surface reports and temperature context.

Wisdom Box

An impressive radar image does not automatically mean severe ground impact where you are. Local temperature, moisture depth, and movement speed still matter.
