Precipitation Rate and Amount
People often focus on totals, but precipitation rate can be just as important for flooding, visibility, travel, and disruption.
Core understanding
Amount tells you how much precipitation accumulates. Rate tells you how intense it is. A modest total can still cause major short-term problems if it falls quickly.
Practical interpretation
Heavy short bursts can overwhelm drainage, slash visibility, and turn traffic conditions poor very quickly. Light precipitation with strong wind may also create outsized impact despite lower totals.
Deeper weather skill
Rate, duration, temperature profile, and wind must be read together. Wet snow at a high rate can accumulate on some surfaces while melting on others. Context determines impact.
Wisdom Box
Do not underestimate a fast burst of weather just because the daily total sounds small.
