Digital modes let you do more with less signal. They are useful for weak-signal contacts, tracking, messaging, images,
and practical communication when voice is not the best tool.
Why digital matters
Digital modes can often succeed when voice would struggle. They also open up entirely different operating styles,
from APRS tracking to Winlink messaging to weak-signal DX.
Main families of digital operation

Digital modes do not replace voice or CW. They add more tools.
The best choice depends on what you are trying to do.
Good starting point
- FT8: easy entry into HF digital and propagation learning.
- APRS: excellent for mobile and practical local use.
- Winlink: strong choice for messaging and preparedness.
- SSTV: good visual mode and great for learning by doing.
Why this sometimes does not work
- Audio levels are wrong.
- Time sync is off.
- The radio path is poor even if the software looks fine.
- Expecting one digital mode to solve every problem.
