Power & Wiring
What this page is for
Reliable radio operation depends on more than having power. It depends on proper wiring, proper grounding, proper bonding, and realistic expectations.
Why power and wiring matter
A poor power installation can create voltage drop, noise, unreliable performance, and safety problems. A clean installation solves far more than people expect.
Power basics
- Run serious gear directly to the battery where appropriate.
- Fuse at the battery and at the radio when practical.
- Use the right wire size for the current and run length.
- Avoid cigarette lighter plugs for higher-power equipment.
Grounding and bonding
- Electrical ground: safety and reference.
- RF ground: often a different practical issue.
- Bonding: connecting metal parts so they act together instead of fighting each other.
- Mobile bonding: often one of the biggest performance improvements you can make.
Real-world note
A well-bonded vehicle or station can make more difference than adding power or changing radios.
RF safety
Keep people and sensitive devices out of areas where RF exposure could become a problem. Safe distance, common sense, and proper installation matter.
If it smells like chicken, it might be you.
Why this sometimes does not work
- Wire size too small.
- Fusing done poorly or not at all.
- Grounding confused with bonding.
- Assuming power problems are radio problems.
